It is even possible to work with Vivado without Vivado, i.e. by just using tcl commands. This might peel away a layer and get me working with details that I ought to learn and master.
This is called "non-project" mode. There is a lot of information in UG895.
I did a search "can i use vivado without a block model" and learned a lot. Working in this, you work entirely in HDL.UG892 has a whole section "using non-project mode". This is called "design flows overview". 96 pages.
