Exotic Gear

These are things that are generally quite expensive and with special capabilities. Given both of those considerations, they are interesting, but I am unlikely to rush out and buy any of them, interesting though they may be. The Rode NTG2 is the giant shotgun mic I saw in Dallan's office. He says he uses it for Zoom. He calls it a "cheaper mic" ($270) that in hindsight, was a bad choice, XLR output.

Microphone shootout

And here is a video with a vast collection of high end microphones: What follows is a list of some of the gear they use: What is ORTF? If comes from french "Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française". It is a method for stereo recording where two microphones are placed 17cm apart at a 110 angle. So you need a pair of nearly identical microphones. The setup is somewhat like a human head.

What is Jecklin Disk or Decca Tree? A Jecklin disk places two microphones on either side of a sound absorbing barrier to get a stereo recording. A decca tree uses 3 microphones in a T pattern.

The Sony D100 recorder includes a pair of electret condensor microphones. It would seem that they tested these microphones rather than the recorder (they used the sound devices recorders)
