Taxes, circa 2026

I have used Turbo-Tax the past 6 years and was ready to use it again this year. However TurboTax Desktop now requires Windows 11. I use linux, but have a perfectly good Windows 10 machine handy that I have always used for things like TurboTax. Windows 11 has a stupid requirement that your processor has a security/encryption feature (which my Intel i7 does not). So to run TurboTax I would have to buy a new processor and motherboard, not to mention Windows 11. Ignoring the cost, even the time to do this (just to file taxes) is out of the question.

Maybe it is time for Free Tax USA or some more sensible software.

Intuit (i.e. TurboTax Inc.) offers a browser based online option, which is what I will try to use. I will need to use a browser on my windows machine, as it recommends that I let it import last years tax files from TurboTax Desktop.

Taxes, circa 2019

I started using Turbo-Tax several years ago, and boy, is it worlds better than grinding through the Federal forms. However, it has always seems like somebodies High School science fair project, not a real piece of quality software.

A friend of mine told me about Free Tax USA. It saved him thousands of dollars compared to TurboTax. Admittedly he did have a unique tax situation, but it was able to handle it, and it gave him expert advice along the way. I am seriously tempted to give it a try next year. The downside will be that it won't automatically import my previous year like Turbo Tax does, but maybe that is the price of moving foward.
