Color Temperature and White Balance

Different light sources have a different spectral curve. Sources that are based on light emission from heated objects (like the sun or a tungsten filament) can have their spectral output characterized by a single number, the color temperature. Other sources such as fluorescent lights and LED emitters can have odd spectral curves which cannot be so easily characterized (though some kind of useful approximation can be and often is sometimes made).
