Filters for lens protection

This is a hot topic among photographers. Using a filter to protect your lens seems like a good idea, but some people claim that the filter produces significant image degradation. What is the truth? What can actually be demonstrated?

This page is one of the best (from BH photo) and allows you to compare images shot with and without a UV filter.

This next fellow gives conclusions and claims to have done exhaustive testing, but we never do see he results to judge for ourselves.

The next guy does better showing results with and without a filter. He brings up other angles and issues. Beyond 5 minutes gets into silly lens smashing, which is not at all what I am concerned about. The following is pretty good, but hardly definitive.
