The SZX microscope system is the ultimate research stereo microscope in the Olympus line. Long working distance, wide zoom range, excellent image clarity and easy operation are matched by a modular system of mechanical and motorized components giving the SZX great flexibility, allowing adaptation to meet the needs of virtually any stereo microscope user.

The SZX gives the user maximum flexibility in observing the specimen without switching objectives. A series of parfocal objectives is also available along with a dual nosepiece. This allows the user to utilize the full zoom range of two objectives by easily rotating one or the other into the light path. Using the 0.5x and 1.6x objectives and 10x eyepieces on the SZX12 gives an effective zoom range of 3.5x to 144x, or a 41:1 ratio.

2.5x Auxiliary Lens
The SZX-AL20X lens attaches to the 1.0x objective, increasing total magnification by 2.5x while increasing resolution to 800 lines/mm. This high magnification and resolution closely match the view seen by a 20x objective on a compound microscope. Therefore a user can maintain convenient observation with the SZX12 in many cases where it used to be necessary to move the specimen to a compound microscope.

Illuminators

  • Transmitted Light
Three transmitted light bases-basic, advanced and darkfield versions. The advanced model has an adjustable mirror that can be tilted and translated across the field of view, giving contrast-enhancing oblique illumination. The darkfield version has an exceptionally large illuminated field that allows for high and low magnification darkfield observation. All transmitted light bases can be illuminated by a 6V/30W bulb or an optional 150W fiber optic illuminator.
  • Coaxial
The coaxial illuminator has a 1.5x magnification factor and a quarter wave plate to reduce glare. It is powered by a fiber optic illuminator.
  • Fluorescence
Stereo fluorescence is easily accomplished by a 100W mercury lamp* and a choice of two fluorescence illuminators: the standard model (SZX-RFL2) employs a variety of filter sets illuminating the specimen through the objective in the traditional manner of a fluorescence microscope; the advanced model (SZX-RFL3) also employs a variety of filter sets but illuminates the specimen from outside the objective, eliminating auto-fluorescence from the lens system.
Camera Ports
One of the most interesting aspects of the SZX is the ability to attach multiple cameras. Up to three cameras can image simultaneously in the proper configuration. In addition to a trinocular head with a photoport, a beamsplitter module is available that will split off both the left and right optical paths independently to cameras. This allows for imaging of either optical path, or both for stereo pairs.

  • Motorized Stereo Zoom & Focusing Unit (zoom 0.7-9) - with the optional footswitch, the SZX allows hands-free operation of the microscope for critical dissections and/or prolonged observation periods. This unit also supports our SZX-RFL2 fluorescence illuminator.
  • Motorized Focusing Unit - a less expensive alternative for microscopists who only require motorized focus control.
  • Dual nosepiece-allows mounting of two objectives for easy changeover. For parfocal objectives, this extends the zoom range of the microscope. Available with an optional setting to align the objective with either optical axis for on-axis photomicrography.
  • Tilting Observation Tube-allows eyepiece to be inclined from 5º to 45º for maximum user comfort. Addition of an eye-point adjuster, SZX-EPA, allows even taller users to assume a natural posture while looking in the microscope.
  • Fine Focus Unit-for coaxial fine and coarse focus
  • Beamsplitter Photoport-allows imaging of the right and/or left optical path. Attaches CCD or film cameras, and can be used for stereo pair imaging.

Stereo Fluorescence Illuminators

  • SZX-RFL2 - Illuminator with 4 position slider for brightfield and fluorescence filter sets. Fluorescence excitation is accomplished via dichromatic mirrors in the optical axes of the microscope. The microscope objective acts as both the illuminating and imaging lens.
  • SZX-RFL3 - Illuminator with 5 position turret for brightfield and fluorescence filter sets. Fluorescence excitation is accomplished through an external illuminating lens behind the objective. The microscope objective serves only as the imaging lens, not the illuminating lens. This essentially eliminates auto-fluorescence due to the objective lens.

A selection of high NA and long working distance achromat and apochromat objectives are available:

SZX9:

  • 0.5x Plan Achromat
  • 0.75x Plan Achromat
  • 1x Achromat and 1x Plan Apochromat
  • 1.5x Plan Achromat
  • 2x Plan Achromat

SZX12:

  • Parfocal Objectives - A series of PF parfocal objectives has been created for the SZX12, a feature found in no other stereo microscope. Dual objective nosepiece SZX-2RE, another feature unique to the SZX, allows attachment of two objectives. When one parfocal objective is rotated in for another, the specimen remains in focus, effectively increasing the zoom range of the microsocpe.
  • 0.5x Plan Fluorite PF
  • 1x Plan Apochromat PF
  • 1.2x Plan Apochromat PF
  • 1.6x Plan Fluorite PF

  • 2.5x Auxiliary Lens - A special, high-magnification auxiliary lens attaches to the 1.0X PF parfocal objective, providing superior resolution of over 800 lines/mm. A removable cap facilitates viewing through water or air.

  • Low Magnification/Long Working Distance
  • 0.3x Plan Fluorite at 130mm
  • 0.45x Plan Fluorite at 198mm

  • Digital Cameras
  • Video Cameras
  • Photomicrography Systems
  • Imaging Systems
  • Narishige Manipulators—attachable to pre-drilled holes in the SZX transmitted light bases.
  • Fiber Optic Illuminators—available from Fostec and Volpi for attachment to the transmitted light bases through a single bundle, or to the coaxial illuminator through a dual bundle.
  • EXFO-Burleigh® X-Cite 120 Metal Halide Illumination System - the X-Cite 120 system utilizes a pre-centered lamp in combination with a liquid light guide coupling to the microscope. The unit can be used for transmitted or reflected light and is especially well suited for FITC and Rhodamine fluorescence applications.
