Open "mission control" by using F3 (fn1+3 on my keyboard).
Now move the mouse to the new bar that shows up at the top of the screen. At the far right is a "+" to add new desktops. I add 3 new ones, so now I have four.
You switch via Ctrl plus the left or right arrows. It all works and seems simple enough.
