I go to the offical Google chrome download site. This gives me googlechrome.dmg (about 384M). I double click it right in the download hopper.
This is useless and frustrating. It wants me to drag it to the applications folder, but when I try that, the applications app vanishes as soon as I grab the chrome thingie.
I search and find a video on how to do this. They made this too easy. The graphic they give you when you double click the dmg file is all you need. You do all your dragging right in the graphic they give you. Just grab the thingie at the top and drag it onto the thingie below.
You get a progress bar and then the applications folder opens up and you can find it alphabetized by "G" for Google Chrome. I drag the icon to my dock alongside Safari (which I will get rid of soon enough).
Chrome adds itself to a list of things apple calls "Login items". In particular, it adds the Chrome updater to "Background Apps". Also there is Adobe Creative Cloud.
