Tucson area hikes - the Tortolitas

The Tortolitas are the low, rather inconspicuous mountains to the west of the Catalinas. They have become more popular as development in the Marana and Oro Valley areas encroach upon them.

Elevations range from 3000 to 4000 feet, so this is not an area for summer hiking.

In March of 2012, a newspaper article claimed that there were 29 miles of trails in the Tortolitas. To get to the Dove Mountain trailhead, which is the start of the "Wild Burro Trail", drive up Oracle or La Cholla to Tangerine Road and head west to Dove Mountain Boulevard. Follow this north to the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain resort entrance. You will probably have to ask staff to direct you to the trailhead parking which is on the right (east).
