FPGA - Zedboard basics
After letting it gather dust for 2 years, I have dug it out again and am trying
to remember how to use it.
Details
- Xilinx XC7Z020-1CLG484C Zynq-7000 SoC
- 512 Mbytes of DDR3 ram (as 128M x 32 - a pair of chips)
- 32 Mbytes of flash (Qspi)
- 10/100/1G ethernet
The Zynq chip on the Zedboard has a much bigger FPGA than the chip on my Ebaz boards.
It has 85K logic cells (as compared to 28K), 220 DSP slices (compare to 80)
and 4.9 Mb of block ram (compare to 2.1) as well as 200 IO pins (compare to 100).
Power
There is a barrel connector with a power switch nearby. My unit came with a power supply, but
it is misplaced somewhere. The user manual says:
"The board’s primary input is through a 12V barrel jack.
A compatible AC/DC converter will have a 2.5mm inner diameter,
5.5mm outer diameter, center positive connection."
I have lots of 12 volt "wall warts" -- but most have a narrower inner connector.
The official supply will provide 4 amps (they say), which seems like an awful lot
for such a small board -- but certainly won't cause any harm.
