Ergodox EZ -- general information

ZSA now makes the Ergodox, Moonlander, and Voyager. Perhaps they also make other things I am unaware of.

These all sell for $365. If you want to save money and buy a used keyboard, you are most likely to find the oldest of the three, the Ergodox. This is pretty much the most expensive keyboard you can find. They are made in Taiwan and top quality.

The Moonlander has an adjustable 4 key thumbcluster (the EEZ has 6 key and fixed). The Moonlander also has per key lighting. The Moonlander comes with a carrying case and aims to be more portable -- the Ergodox is more robust.

The Voyager pushes portability even more with smaller keys and is ideal for travel and smaller hands. It uses Choc switches which are more shallow. Ergodox uses standard MX switches. It has fewer keys and needs more layers.

Key features:

The default layout has some pretty weird choices, so you will almost certainly end up customizing. They say to start with the default and make changes incrementally (which is always good advice).

You can switch layers by holding down a certain key.
You can also switch just for the next keypress.

You have keycap choices. If you go with unmarked keycaps (as I did) you get PBT and they are individually sculpted.

If you get printed caps, they are made by "Signature Plastics" and are double shot injected ABS.

The following site used to be "pimpmykeyboard.com", which was always Signature Plastics, but I guess they fell back to this more professional sounding site name.

A full set of keycaps will cost you $90 if you buy them from Ergodox.

There are 12 different switch types available, and you can mix as many different types as you want on the board. (The Linux TT board had 5 different types mounted).

browns everywhere, except:
reds on WASD
blacks on keys you don't want to hit by accident
Kahil gold for the number keys
Cherry whites
The lighting is not from under the keys, but from under the board, which doesn't strike me as wildly useful.
