Rigol DS1054Z Oscilloscope tutorial - advanced trigger

I have already talked about the trigger in a basic way, but here I want to boil down Section 5 of the manual. Advanced use of the trigger is key to using a storage scope like the Rigol with a single trace capture feature.

Pressing the MENU button in the trigger section allows the menu softkeys on the right side of the screen to select things from the trigger menu.

The trigger source can be any one of the four channels or "AC".

The trigger section also has a MODE button (at the top) which can select Auto, Normal, or Single. The "Sweep" softkey is another way of choosing from these exact same 3 choices.

Auto - A waveform is displayed at all times, even if the trigger condition is not met.

Normal - The scope displays the last waveform that yielded a trigger while waiting for another trigger condition.

Single - This is the same mode you get if you press the SINGLE button at the top of the scope for the first time. The scope waits for a single trigger event, and when it occurs it stops and displays the waveform.

Note that the scope is saving data prior to the trigger event. So it displays a capture with the trigger in the middle.

Under "Settings" in the trigger menu is "Coupling", which can be DC, AC, or with a high or low pass filter.

Under "Settings" in the trigger menu is "Holdoff", which is a time after one trigger event that the scope wait before rearming the trigger. This can be from the default 16ms up to 10 seconds.

There are a boatload of trigger types! The default is "Edge", as you might expect. Here is the full list. I won't try to work through all of these here. I'll just note that if you select one, the rest of the softkey labels change accordingly. These take up about 40 pages in the manual.

Edge, Pulse, Slope, Video, Pattern, Duration, Timeout, Runt, Window, Delay, StpHold, Nth, RS232, i2c, SPI.
