Cops
Most are good folks with plenty to do that has nothing to do with me.
Cops at your front door
When police come to your home, do they ask you to step outside to “talk”?
I have not found this to be the case.
Generally, they attempt to enter the home.
Once in the home they can conduct legal search for “officer safety”.
This safety search can include the entire house.
Anything within “plain view” (this concept is very broad) can be used against you.
Good practice is to:
- Establish they are in fact law enforcement officers.
- Step outside and close the door behind you. (pointedly close the door)
- Politely answer their questions. Short answers. Do not offer explanations.
- If they threaten to take you to the station terminate the interview.
This threat is a ploy to intimidate you and get you to incriminate yourself.
As my former lawyer (now a Circuit Court Judge) advised me, Cops lie.
Why do police ask "do you know why I stopped you" at a traffic stop
They are offering you a chance to incriminate yourself!
Best answer: "No officer, please educate me."
Feedback? Questions?
Drop me a line!
