I began many many (many) years ago using VxWorks hosted on Sun workstations. It has been nearly 20 years (more by the time you read this) since I have had anything to do with a Sun workstation. I now happily host all my VxWorks activities on Linux machines on Intel hardware.
There are two aspects of this -- compiling software on one hand, and booting over the network on the other.
