Sun 3 bootrom souce - How much did a 3-160 cost

In general, Sun did not sell a bare 3-160 board. A 1988 price list showed the price for a diskless 3-140 system without monitor or keyboard to be $15,200. This would have been just the 3-160 board in a 3 slot case, just like I use.

It is worth noting that "3-160 board" is a bit of a misnomer. A 3-160 was a system in a 12 slot chassis.

Salient specifications:

MC68020 cpu running at 16 Mhz
MC68881 math coprocessor at 16 Mhz
4M of ram
Intel ethernet (10 Mbit)
Two serial ports
VME bus interface

I find it entertaining to compare it to a board I commonly use for experiments, namely an Antminer S9 control board. This is part of a now obsolete bitcoin mining setup, and is commonly available for around $30. (As of 8-2025 I bought one on Ebay for $26 with free shipping).
Salient Specifications:

Dual core ARM an 666 Mhz with floating point
512M of ram
1000 Mbit ethernet
Console serial port with up to 115200 baud
large FPGA with a lot of IO

It is an unfair comparison if you don't stop to consider some things. The 3-160 was made in 1986 (based on date codes on chips on the board I have handy to look at). The Antminer was made in 2017.

That is what 31 years will do for you in the world of computer technology! Note also that the Antminer is obsolete and available for absurdly low prices on Ebay and AliExpress. That is what 8 years will do for you.
