Some Current Printers

I am still exploring the possibility of using a used HP LaserJet 4, or some kind of sturdy well made serious laser printer instead of a cheap plastic printer I can buy at an office store. But I have done a little market study in case the LaserJet 4 does not work out.

HP LaserJet P2015dn

The big recommendation here is that my friend Alan has one, likes it, and it works for him with MacOS. It sells (used or refurbished) for $150 or so, but a printer is one of the things I am unwilling to buy used. It uses a 53A cartridge ($70) or a 53X ($120) This is discontinued, replaced by the P2055dn. Looks like a real printer.

HP LaserJet P2055dn

Price on Amazon 10/2011 is $275. Network interface, double sided printing, 30 pages/minute. These use the 05A cartridge ($83 for 2300 pages) or you can buy the extended life 05x cartridge ($130). This looks like a real printer.

HP Laser Jet P2035n

Price on Amazon 10/2011 is $195. Worth looking at.

HP Laser Jet "Pro" P1102W

A flimsy home printer for $97. I think the "Pro" designation is added as some kind of a joke. It uses usb or wireless; the wireless is a cute feature. Single sided only. Effective 600 dpi (400x600x2)

HP Laser Jet P1606dn

A decent home printer with one major con. Price on Amazon 10/2011 is $160. The con is that the toner cartridge (the 78A) costs $63 (or shop around and buy two for $49 each) and prints only about 1000 pages. This seems to be universally agreed on, although HP claims 2300 pages. Effective 1200 dpi (600x600x2) Considering I do very little printing (maybe 10 pages each month), this actually might do OK for me, but I really think I would be happer with the 2055. One fellow said their business had bought a bunch of these and were rushing to replace them since they were going broke buying toner cartridges.

Samsung ML-3712nd

This was recommended by one fellow as a "real printer". One virtue is that it prints 8000 pages on a $125 cartridge.
