Changing a network card (or other controller).

This used to be nearly impossible for mere mortals to do, and most would resort to just reinstalling from delivery media. The linux install always seemed to do a great job of figuring out what hardware you had and getting a set of modules arranged to handle things.

Things have gotten much better now with the "kudzu" package. It used to be that you had to be some kind of modules guru to manage something like upgrading a network card (or replacing a sick one with one of a different type), but now things are a no brainer, and there is not really any reason for this page to still exist!
