1999 Camry - fuel leak

See also some notes I have on the ORVR and emission codes.

I hot weather I am smelling gas odors near my Tacoma. No problem now that the weather is cool. My mechanic has given a $950 estimate to drop the fuel tank and fix both this and the ORVR code. He says it is a cracked plastic piece and is fairly common.

That is a lot of money, but I understand how much work it is to drop a fuel tank. The code is intermittent and I was able to reset it, and go through emission inspection in the clear and register the vehicle. So I am good for 2 years (through 2024?).

I asked my mechanic if he thought it was a fire hazard. He didn't think so, and said it was all about fumes getting into the atmosphere and wrecking the planet. So I can drive as is, albeit with a certain amount of guilt.

I asked if the repair could be accomplished through the hatch under the back seat. He laughed and said no, and that if that was possible, that would certainly be what they would do. Hence the following post about leak at the sending unit is probably not relevant. However, I should pull the seat and make an inspection to satisfy myself.
