Known problems with the Gen5 4runner
This list started with this video (jump in 25 minutes or so).
We know the 4runner is old school. And we like it.
But this is about known mechanical issues that at least need to be kept in mind
- Lifting causes premature failure of the front differential.
- Front wheel bearings sometimes fail early (150,000 miles or so) -- check for loose wheels.
- Run the vehicle in 4x4 every month for a bit or expect trouble.
- The park/neutral safety switch is prone to failure, cheap and simple to replace.
- Rust in the frame (salt) -- not an issue for me in Tucson, Arizona.
I should activate my Tacoma (2000) 4x4 once a month also ..... good to know now that I have owned
it for over 20 years.
Best trim?
- SR5 is the basic trim, but a great deal.
- Limited - buy if you don't intend to offroad. (full time 4x4)
- TRD OR adds a manual transfer case
- TRD ORP is the best!
- Pro - doesn't ride as well, costs a lot for little difference
Other trims (i.e. "sport") make no sense.
